In front of its largest crowd this season, the Ball State gymnastics team fell short to three nationally ranked teams on Sunday.
The Cardinals placed fourth in the meet before an announced attendance of 1,571 people. Ohio State, West Virginia and Auburn all finished ahead of Ball State.
Ohio State, ranked 11th in the national polls, finished with the event's top score of 195.450. No. 24 West Virginia, the event's host, claimed second place with a 195.175 and No. 13 Auburn finished with a third-place score of 193.650.
The uneven parallel bars proved to be Ball State's best event in the meet. Freshman Brooklyn Schumacher had the highest mark on the team, tallying 9.850. Schumacher would tie for fourth place with West Virginia gymnasts Hope Sloanhoffer and Kaylyn Millick.
Senior Julie Cotter also tied for seventh place with West Virgnia's Erica Smith and Ohio State's Alyssa Marohn on the bars. All three gymnasts finished with 9.825.
On the floor routine, sophomore Angie Hasbach tallied Ball State's highest mark. Her score of 9.650 tied for a 12th place finish with Auburn's Brittany Webster. For the floor overall, Ball State came away with a 47.775.
Junior Nicole Allen led the Cardinals on the vault with a score of 9.725, leading them to a 48.025. Allen came in a four-way tie for 13th place.
Ball State's lowest scores of the afternoon came on the balance beam. The Cardinals recorded a score of 47.025, with sophomore Aftyn Siemer finishing with Ball State's best score of 9.725. Her performance put her in 14th place.
The Cardinals return home to Irving Gym at 7 p.m. on Friday for a meet against Eastern Michigan. The meet is the team's annual "Think Pink" meet for breast cancer awareness.
