UPB to host Yule Ball

The University Program Board and the Ball State Ballroom Dance League are offering interested students the opportunity to learn ballroom dancing at a dress-code free ball tonight. UPB hosts a Yule Ball from 8 to 11 p.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom.

Borrowing the title from the event in the fourth Harry Potter book, graduate assistant to student programs, Lauren Ross, said although the name was inspired by the series, the actual event will not be wizard-themed.

"Itcame from Harry Potter, but we put our own spin on it," Ross said. "There's nothing Harry Potter-themed at the event."

The ball was originally supposed to be held during December of Fall Semester, but she said there were scheduling conflicts with available space on campus.

"We weren't able to reserve a room on campus that would be able to hold the type of ball that we wanted the event to be," Ross said. "So we just decided to hold it in January."

UPB plans on handing out surprise gifts to the first 100 students at the event.

Although only about 70 people have responded to the ball on Facebook by Tuesday night, Ross said she expects there to be a large amount of students in attendance.

"We've done a lot of marketing at Friday Night Filmworks," Ross said. "And we've been handing out tickets around campus."

The event will be set up formally inside the ballroom, but formal attire is not required to attend.

Ross said they are expecting an equal amount of formally and casually dressed people at the event. There is no dress code.

In addition to having a DJ at the event, UPB has teamed up with the Ball State Ballroom Dance League. The group will perform for attendees and offer dance lessons.

The event is free to students and $1 for guests.
