Temporary shutdown at Cleo's causes Dance Marathon to cancel fundraiser

Ball State Dance Marathon's Tacky Prom was canceled Friday night as a result of an inspection that shut down Cleo's Bar and Grill on Thursday.

The bar was reopened the same afternoon, but on Friday it wasn't allowed to serve food to its patrons. Chris Ellison, owner of the bar, was not available for comment at the time of publication.

BSUDM president Michael Bramer said this was the second time they had to postpone the event. Even though the bar was open on Friday, he didn't want to have the event there if food would not be available.

"For this year, it will be canceled," he said. "We just don't have enough time left before Dance Marathon."

Bramer said that after the previous setback, BSUDM had been offered free pizza to host their event at Cleo's again.

"We had a chance to move the event to a different location, but we would not have had the pizza, and that's something we had on our advertisements," he said.

This is the first year BSUDM has attempted to host a "Tacky Prom" event. Bramer said he was disappointed to see an opportunity for fundraising disappear.

"We hope to try to do it again next year," he said, "but definitely at a different location."

He also said that there was the possibility for Tacky Prom to take place on campus, but BSUDM still hopes to reach a larger crowd off campus.

Bramer said he was not entirely sure what was involved in the inspection but that it had something to do with food preparation.

"Honestly, we were told [Thursday] night, so we don't know much about it," he said.

Cleo's is located at 1625 W. University Ave. Its owner also operates the Silo in downtown Muncie.
