4 Indiana National Guardsmen killed in Afghanistan

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana National Guard says four soldiers with an Indiana-based Guard unit have been killed in Afghanistan.

A National Guard statement released Saturday afternoon says the four soldiers were members of the 713th Engineer Company headquartered in Valparaiso and were conducting combat route clearance operations.

The statement does not indicate how, when or where the three Indiana men and a fourth from Illinois died, but says they were killed in action.

They are identified as Staff Sgt. Jonathan M. Metzger of Indianapolis, Spc. Brian J. Leonhardt of Merrillville, Spc. Christopher A. Patterson of Aurora, Ill., and Spc. Robert J. Tauteris Jr. of Hamlet.

Gov. Mitch Daniels says in a statement that he was informed of the men's deaths Saturday morning and that he's praying for their families.
