Students decorate for holidays, some risks arise

Evidence of the holiday spirit can already be seen throughout campus, from wreaths in the Atrium to a giant Christmas tree outside of LaFollette Complex.

Freshman Gabrielle Bunn decorated her dorm room door to look like a Christmas present. She used red wrapping paper with sparkles to cover the door and gold ribbon to make a bow.

"I like to decorate stuff because it makes me feel like I'm at home even when I'm not at home," the finance major said. "I know I'm not going to be able to go home for the next three weeks. I just wanted a little piece of home here with me."

She said she plans to bring in stockings and a small Christmas tree along with the few presents she has wrapped.

Freshman Hayli Goode brought a small Christmas tree from home and put a Santa rug outside her door.

"I love Christmas and we always decorate at my house, and I just wanted to feel comfortable and celebrate," the magazine journalism major said.

There are some regulations to holiday decorations, though.

Safety specialist Tim Kirby sent out an email listing all of the specific regulations involving extension cords, trees and candles. He said that the biggest violations involve candles and electrical cords.

"There's a lot of misconceptions people have about using decorations, and there's not a lot of forethought," Kirby said. "A lot of damage can occur if they're not done properly."

One of the biggest misconceptions involve Christmas lights, he added.

"People think you can keep stringing them together," Kirby said. "They don't pay attention to the amount of current going through those things. They think because they're small and little the wires can't get hot, they can't overload them."

If the lights are not strung properly, the wiring can heat up and create a fire, he said.

Another issue is when the lights are stapled to the wall. Staples can go through the cord, which will stop the current.
