IPR radio show spotlighting local artists

"The Scene" is splashing the airwaves of Indiana Public Radio by showcasing live central Indiana music.

Rick Sadlier, a graduate student at Ball State and Indiana Public Radio employee, helps run the show and has been on the air since January. It showcases up and coming local musical acts as well as touring acts that come through the area.

"The show was an idea that [has] been going around internally here at IPR and the university for some time," Sadlier said. "Our general manager, Marcus Jackman, teamed up with Phil Repp to feature entertainment and music that goes on in this part of Indiana."

All sides of the musical spectrum are hoped to be represented in the show, but indie and alternative are the main entrees served on "The Scene."

"We like the show indie rock, so I think that's part of our target audience," Sadlier said. "But we've also reported on Ball State's jazz program. We've done country, we've done bluegrass and we've done folk, so it varies."

The show has even featured national-touring indie rock groups, such as Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. and other rising acts.

"I was really pleased with Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., and it's a really great episode," Sadlier said. "We've also featured Company of Thieves, which is a major-label act that ... [has toured] ... with O.A.R. ... We're small enough to get bands before they blow up, but we're big enough to where they want the opportunity."

The show has been to various venues in Muncie such as Doc's Music Hall, Be Here Now and even the David Letterman Communication and Media Building. Venues in Indianapolis aren't foreign to the show either.

"The furthest we have been to is downtown Indianapolis to Fountain Square, where there's a venue, and we have also been to Vollrath Tavern in Indianapolis," Sadlier said. "We try to make sure the venues that are featured are within our listening area."

Jacob Zimmerman, another Ball State student working on the show, believes the show has been fairly successful so far.

"We've gotten really good feedback from those who have listened to it," Zimmerman said. "I think we're getting there."

Sadlier also believes the show's success has been good so far.

"We're getting to the point now where bands are reaching out to us, instead of us reaching out to them when it started," Sadlier said.

"The Scene" airs at 10 p.m. on Saturdays on Indiana Public Radio and re-airs on WCRD 91.3 FM at 8 p.m. on Sundays.

Saturday's episode will be the ninth of the season and will feature the acts Poor Ol' Jim and She Does Is Magic.
