Emergency Management System to run tests today

People watching TV or listening to the radio at 2 p.m. will hear a nation wide test of the Emergency Alert System.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Communications Commission will conduct the 30 second test.

According to a Ball State email, the test will be heard on broadcast radio and television stations, cable television, satellite radio and television services and wireline video service providers.

The warning system was created so the president can address the public during emergencies.

The public will first hear "This is a test," before the alert begins. The test is meant to assure FEMA and the FCC that the system works efficiently.

Ball State officials will decide whether to alert campus in addition to the Emergency Alert System based on the nature of the event, any imminent danger to campus, advance warning of the situation and other factors in the event of an actual emergency, the email said.
