ELECTION DAY: Poll worker reported for wearing firefighter T-shirt

Election day started off rocky due to fierce competition between Democrats and Republicans.

Polls remain open until 6 p.m. at 58 polling sites in Muncie.

Earlier this morning, a Democratic Party poll worker was flagged for wearing a Muncie firefighter T-shirt, which some say could represent support for Democratic candidate Dennis Tyler.

Kaye Whitehead, a Republican member of the Delaware County Election Board, contacted Dale Simmons, co-general councsel for the Indiana Election Division, after receiving reports that the poll worker was wearing the T-shirt, according to The Star Press.

Whitehead noted the issue was a "gray area" because while no candidate's name was on the shirt, the fire department's support for Tyler, who served as a firefighter for 42 and a half years, is well known.

Simmons responded that since the T-shirt did not specifically endorse a candidate, the worker was not in violation.

Republican Mayor Sharon McShurley said earlier today that city election voting was tampered with, as she noticed yard signs bearing her name for mayor have been taken down overnight at many polling sites, according to The Star Press.

The Star Press also noted in the May primary election, Muncie City Council member Julius Anderson (D) was accused of entering a polling place on Election Day.

The Indiana Court of Appeals, which is based off an appeal of a local court decision calling for a special election — ruled in October that Anderson "violated numerous election laws" during the May 3 primary, in which he ended up with a small victory over Richard Ivy. The court ruled the election totals would stand, according to The Star Press.

County Clerk Steven Craycraft, who was tasked with organizing the municipal elections, was unavailable for comment.
