Dodgebro brings about 240 to first time tournament

The first Dodgebro Dodgeball Tournament brought out the competition in fraternity members on Sunday in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

Alpha Tau Omega won first place, and Sigma Phi Epsilon won second place. Sigma Alpha Epsilon won best costume for wearing tuxedos, a batman costume and cowboy hats. Phi Delta Theta was the fraternity with the highest attendance, and Alpha Omicron Pi was the sorority with the highest attendance.

Winners won gift cards to Sears and Goodwill, two sponsors of the event.

The event was free to all fraternities and was organized by the Interfraternity Council as a way for different chapters to get to know each other in a fun environment.

"The whole thing was to unite the greek community as well as build a more positive relationship between IFC and the fraternities on campus," Lily Barker, junior public relations major, said.

Michael Bender, a member of Sigma Chi, said he thinks the event brought him closer to the other chapters and the other members of his fraternity.

Sigma Chi went undefeated for the entire tournament until they lost in the semifinals. Bender, sophomore psychology major, felt confident they would win because their strategy of knocking out the biggest players on the opposing team was working.

"I've gotten closer to my brothers on my team and developed swag," Bender said. "Dodgeball swag, if you will."

All fraternities were represented by at least one team, and sororities cheered on the sidelines.

Phi Mu member Melanie Verburg, junior public relations major, said her favorite part of the event was how it brought the greek community closer together. She said she would like a similar event organized for the sororities.

"It's really nice to support the IFC and the fraternities at Ball State," she said. "It's nice to see everyone come together and have some fun."

Matt Whitlock, senior public relations major and president of IFC, said they wanted to organize something fun for the fraternities. He said he didn't want the fraternities to take the tournament too seriously.

"It's a competitive atmosphere, but at the same time it's dodgeball," he said.

Colin Warner, junior physical education major, was part of the Alpha Tau Omega team that won the tournament. He said he didn't think it brought him closer to other fraternities because it was very competitive, but he had fun.

"Anything competitive is going to stir the pot a little," he said. "It got heated. A lot of accusations were thrown."

He gave credit to the other teams for playing a good game.

"Winning was obviously the goal, but Sig[ma] [Phi] Ep[silon] was good, Sig[ma] Chi was good," Warner said.

Whitlock said that he can see this turning into an annual event with more philanthropic aspects like a possible food drive in the future.
