Campus group to raise money, awareness about modern-day slavery

A comedian will be aiding a Free the Slaves fundraiser tonight by telling her story about being a victim of human trafficking.

The Ball State chapter of Free the Slaves will be hosting an event during their annual fundraiser at 7:30 p.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center's Cardinal Hall.

Free the Slaves is an international, non-governmental organization with the goal to help end worldwide slavery through grassroots organizations, research and empowerment.

The on-campus organization will be hosting author, motivational speaker and stand-up comedian Marti MacGibbon, who is originally from Indiana.

MacGibbon will be speaking to help raise awareness about the presence of human trafficking by talking about her own personal experiences as a former victim of human trafficking in Japan.

Organization president Chelsey Outcalt heard MacGibbon speak in the past at a Free the Slaves event, and enjoyed the experience enough to invite MacGibbon back.

"She used to be stand up comedian, and is actually pretty funny," Outcalt said. "Even though her story isn't very funny."

The author will speak about her own experiences with international human trafficking, domestic violence, addiction and homelessness.

Outcalt feels that the issue of slavery and human trafficking, especially in the United States, is a serious problem that many people overlook or do not even realize is happening.

"It would be great for more people to be aware that it's happening, not just in the United States, but everywhere in the world," Outcalt said.

The event is free and open to the public. Fondue and refreshments will be provided.
