State treasurer visits Ball State to talk about career, plans for future

State Treasurer Richard Mourdock continued his effort to appeal to college students Tuesday night.

The event, where Mourdock discussed his career and hopes for the 2011 State Senate elections, was organized by the Ball State College Republicans.

Many people have questioned Mourdock's decision to run for senator since he is campaigning against Sen. Dick Lugar, who has held his position for 35 years and is known as the "grandfather" for Republicans.

"My name is not somebody else," Mourdock said. "I'm not just another name on the ballot."

Mourdock said he and Lugar have opposing opinions regarding serious issues such as raising debt money, immigration and bailing out automobile companies. Mourdock said he's stood up to the "Barack Obama-Harry Reid agenda" by challenging the bailout of Chrysler.

Mourdock said, if elected, his first order of business would be the change tax codes dramatically and to lower debt.

"These are historic times," he said. "You may not sense it, [but] there will be history books written on this economic era."

Mourdock said he was delighted with the turnout and will speak in West Lafayette on his next stop.

He said student involvement is crucial, especially during the primaries. Students can help with campaigns and phone banks as long as they are registered.

Kayleigh Mohler, College Republicans treasurer, said there has been a 300 percent increase in attendance at the organization's events. She said the increase shows how passionate and dedicated Republican students are to their beliefs.

"It's important to get involved," she said. "[The government is] talking about getting rid of Pell Grants and student loans here in Muncie ... You can make a difference."

New College Republican member Bradley Kieper said the organization has lived up to his expectations so far.

"Seeing Mr. Mourdock here tonight was a real eye opener because we are seeing his generation trying to help our generation," he said.
