FIELD HOCKEY: Cardinals strike first, unable to hold lead

Chippewas score five unanswered goals

Coach Beth Maddox was well aware of how competitive Central Michigan would be against Ball State Saturday afternoon in Muncie.

"I think that they're excited and their energy is going to be really high," Maddox said prior Saturday's game. "They're going to come with an extra bit of energy."

Senior captain midfielder Gretchen Lulow netted her first goal of the season midway through the first half, putting the Cardinals ahead 1-0.

But the one-goal advantage wasn't nearly enough as the Chippewas stormed back by scoring five answered goals and cruised to a 5-1 victory in their first Mid-American Conference game of the season Saturday.

Frustrated, Maddox had a simple explanation for her teams' less than impressive performance.

"We played lazy today," she said.
