Ball Sate organization to show documentary about human trafficking

A common passion for justice and photography motivated a group of students to travel around the world to show the reality of human trafficking through a documentary.

The Ball State chapter of Free the Slaves will show the documentary "Sex + Money: A Natural Search for Human Worth" at 7 p.m. at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center in Cardinal Hall.

Sex + Money is an organization started by five student photojournalists who embarked on a tour of more than 20 countries seeking justice to slaves all across the world.

The documentary follows the group of students as they travel across the U.S., seeking to understand about the sexual exploitation of children, according to the documentary's website.

Free the Slaves decided to show the documentary when one of the members saw the film and was moved by it, group president Chelsey Outcalt said.

"The documentary really inspired us and we thought it would be a great film for our group to show since we are trying to fight to end slavery as well," she said.

Outcalt said she hopes the documentary will spread the knowledge and realization that slavery still exists in the world. She encourages students to come and learn about the topic.

"Some people still think slavery doesn't exist in the world, or even the United States, but there are still slaves in the United States and even in Indiana, which is very hard to believe," Outcalt said. "But it's good for students to know because then we can end it."

Sex + Money encourages people to become activists themselves by aiding the search and rescue of slaves, as well as reporting any possible trafficking in the person's area.

The showing is open to all members of the Ball State community.
