LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Academic policy for financial aid worries student

Recently, Ball State students received an e-Mail about changes that were made to Ball State's Academic Progress Policy. While I understand the reasoning for having a 2.0 GPA and earning 67 percent of credit hours attempted, there is one change that is legitimately distressing. One new policy is that a maximum time frame of 180 credit hours is given for students seeking to graduate with a bachelor's. This one policy has me worrying about my financial aid despite having been extremely successful in my classes.

I have a few reasons for this concern. I received 30 credit hours due to my time in military service, which, according to the financial aid page, does count towards 180 attempted credit hours. It is also stated that financial aid is discontinued if it is projected that the student cannot complete their degree within this 180 credit hour time-frame. Most importantly, I have a 4.0 GPA currently and all classes I have taken aside from a few exceptions (of note being three lower end math courses mandated by the department as my major requires two Calculus courses to be taken) were either required for my major, or for core curriculum requirements. As taking only classes required to graduate is impossible to do for my major due to scheduling, something has to give.

There are a few possible solutions to this matter. First, the transferred credits should be examined and not immediately considered attempted hours. Second, another method to help this matter is to scale back core curriculum requirements as the amount of classes required are one of the reasons I have been put into this situation. Also, I feel that students should be evaluated on a case by case basis as there are individuals such as myself who stand to be penalized without legitimate justification. To me, this is an issue that has to be effectively addressed, as it could keep me from being able to finish my bachelor's degree.
