Report ranks Ind. No. 6 power plant polluter

INDIANAPOLIS — A new environmental report ranks Indiana No. 6 for most toxic air pollution from coal- and oil-fired power plants.

The report issued by the Natural Resources Defense Council and Physicians for Social Responsibility said nearly 70 percent of the 39.6 million pounds of toxic air pollution in Indiana came from power plants. The Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday the top power plant polluters included American Electric Power, AES Corp., Duke Energy, NiSource, Hoosier Energy and Dominion.

Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, Kentucky and Maryland ranked ahead of Indiana as the worst polluters.

The report was issued as the Environmental Protection Agency is considering releasing new regulations for mercury emissions from power plants.

The two groups say the report was based on publicly available data from the EPA.
