Maurer misses cut in John Deere Classic over weekend

A former Ball State men's golf player wrapped up his weekend at the 2011 John Deere Classic.

Brian Maurer, who was a member of the Cardinals' golf team from 2005-09 competed in the PGA Tour event with a 143 after two rounds.

With one over par in the first two rounds of the tournament, he missed the cut in his first PGA Tour event.

In the first round, Maurer eagled the par-5 17th helped him to a -1 after nine holes. He recorded three bogies and a birdie to finish at +2 for the day.

In the second round, Maurer made three birdies and three bogies to shoot a 71, thus missing the cut for the final rounds.

He qualified for the John Deere Classic by winning a sudden-death playoff in the qualifier to become one of four entrants into the field. Last year, he missed qualifying for the event by one stroke.

Maruer ranks 149th and has played this season on the Hooters Tour.

Steve Stricker won the John Deere Classic by shooting a -22.

While at Ball State, he was an All-Mid-American Conference First Team selection his senior season. He posted eight top-20 finishes and four top-10 finishes as a senior.
