CCIM CHINA IMMERSION: Music makes the people come together

The oldest artifacts of music in China can be traced back as far as the Zhou Dynasty.

The music created in the Zhou Dynasty were known as the foundations of music styles for the rest of the Dynasties to follow (1). The style of music created in the Zhou Dynasty started to fade out when the Ming-Quing Dynasties came to power (1). During the Ming Dynasty, the Kun opera became very popular to many Chinese people, and in the Quing Dynasty, the Peking opera reached its peak of popularity(1).

With China becoming more "Westernized," Chinese music has also adapted to the pop styles in the past years. The first type of western music to come to China was western classical music. When this type of music hit China, many orchestras were created, and they later added jazz instruments.

Even with the impact of the west in Chinese music, the Chinese music did not disappear. Instead, the two blended together. This type of music began to come together in Shanghai first and created what is known as yellow music (2). This type of music can still be heard at many Shanghai night clubs.
