TRACK AND FIELD: Ball State freshman finishes 18th at NCAA Regionals

Lomax to build on experience for future

Ball State track and field freshman Rebecca Lomax tied for 18th in the high jump competition on Friday in the 2011 NCAA East Preliminary Round at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex.

Lomax did not qualify for the NCAA Championships since only the top 12 jumps advance, which will be held June 8-11 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.

Despite not qualifying, she said she is blessed to make it as far as she did.

"It gave me so much hope for what is to come in the future," Lomax said. "Being surrounded with such high-quality athletes and performances has given me a hunger and a drive to go harder than I have ever done before."

Before qualifying for the preliminary round, Lomax set a new record at Northern Illinois' Track and Field Complex, which hosted the Mid-American Conference Championships this year.

During the championships, Lomax cleared a height of 5 feet 10 inches, setting a stadium record.

In addition, her jump earned her the second-best jump in the program's history.

"One of the greatest aspects out of the entire experience is the fact that I am still young, which allows me some time to develop more skill," she said.

Lomax said restrict her expectations next season.

"I am not going to set a specific height for next season because that would be setting limits," she said. "But I do have a goal and that is to make it to the Olympic trials."
