Recipes add burst of flavor to July 4

Need something simple to bring to that traditional Fourth of July celebration? Try some of these red, white and blue recipes.

Red, White and Blue Trifle

Switch up the traditional whipped cream and Jell-o parfaits with layers of cake and fruit.

Ingredients

  • 1 box red velvet cake mix
  • 1 (16-ounce) tub whipped cream
  • 2 pints blueberries
  • 1 pint strawberries (cut off tops)

Directions

  • Bake the red velvet cake, following the box directions.
  • After letting it cool, cut into 1 inch squares and line the bottom of the trifle bowl with half.
  • Spread a 2-inch layer of whipped cream on top followed by three-quarters of the blueberries.
  • Layer remaining pieces cake, then whipped cream.
  • Line the perimeter of the bowl with strawberries (cut side down), and fill the center with remaining blueberries.

Rocket Popsicles

Go back to your childhood with miniature versions of the popular red, white and blue popsicle.

Ingredients

  • Red juice (raspberry, cherry or cranberry flavor)
  • Blue juice (such as blue Kool Aid or Gatorade)
  • White juice (lemonade or coconut juice drink)
  • 3 ounce paper cups
  • Popsicle sticks

Directions

  • Pour 2 tablespoons of red juice into each cup. Freeze 2 to 3 hours until firm or slushy.
  • Remove from freezer and poke a popsicle stick into the center of each cup of juice.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of white juice and freeze for 2 to 3 hours.
  • Finish with a layer of blue juice and freeze until solid.
  • Peel off paper cups to serve.

Roman Candle

Remember, don't drink alcohol while shooting off actual roman candles or any other sort of firework.

Ingredients

  • 3 ounces Three-O Berry Vodka
  • 1/2 ounce cranberry juice
  • Dash of Grenadine
  • 1/2 ounce Blue Curacao

Directions

  • Shake vodka, cranberry juice and grenadine in a shaker with ice.
  • Strain into a martini glass.
  • Pour Blue Curacao slowly down the side of the glass so it settles at the bottom.
  • Finished drink should have a layer of blue beneath a layer of red alcohol.
