Purdue fights to retain faculty amid funding cuts

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.  — Purdue University officials say they're facing increasing competition to keep talented staff because of dwindling state resources that have affected salary increases.

The Journal & Courier reports the university made 155 offers of higher-than-normal salary increases between July 2009 and April of this year in an attempt to keep faculty from leaving.

Purdue leaders say the campus is being "raided" by other institutions. Provost Tim Sands says he is working with deans of Purdue's colleges to identify 7 percent worth of cuts and is concerned about how those reductions will affect faculty retention.

Purdue is trying to help with retention by identifying faculty who could be targets for recruitment and implementing new programs including some that help new faculty find jobs for their spouses.
