New Indiana laws part of a raft of changes will take effect Friday, including laws on texting, synthetic marijuana and guns.
Law: IC 11-12-3.7-3
What it means: Possessing, dealing, manufacturing or delivering synthetic cannabinoid, such as "spice," or a salvia equivalent is now illegal.
Law: IC 9-13-2-177.3
What it means: Drivers who use a telecommunications device to type, transmit or read a text message or an email while operating a motor vehicle may be fined. The law permits people to use a hand free or voice operated device to transmit a text message or email, and to call 911 or report an emergency while operating a vehicle. Violators may be fined up to $500.
Law: IC 35-47-2-15
What it means: A retail handgun dealer's license is valid for six years from the date the license is issued instead of two years. The fee to obtain the license will be $60 instead of $20.
Law: IC 35-47-2-1
What it means: The new law will allow a person to carry a handgun without a permit if he or she is at their own residence or a friend's residence, if he or she is carrying it to a shooting range or if the handgun is unloaded and securely wrapped.
