Cardinal Kid Camp offers safe, fun activities for kids

When walking by Ball Gymnasium, students may notice the lawn filled with children carrying matching bags with the letters CKC printed on them.

That's because this year marks the 18th year of Cardinal Kid Camp.

The first of nine CKC sessions started last week. Children will continue to pile through campus to have a safe, recreationally based summer until Aug. 5.

Jason Adamowicz, associate director of Sports Facilities Management and Recreation Services, said he was a camp counselor for 13 years and enjoys working with the camp because of kids' positive reactions.

"I was always amazed at the impression we made on the campers," he said. "It was so much fun to provide a day full of laughs and safe activity."

The children are under the supervision of individuals who display the characteristics of being creative, patient, safety conscious, responsible, trustworthy and reliable.

CKC was originally started for faculty members' children, but now the camp is open to children in the Muncie area. The camp also provides Ball State students the opportunity to work with children for the summer.

A typical day at CKC is nothing short of active.

Some activities that the children can come to camp excited about include spending the day swimming at the Ball Pool and venturing over to the Student Wellness Recreational Center to attempt to conquer to rock wall and to play various indoor games on the turf, Adamowicz said.

Some of the favorite activities include kickball, dodge ball and basketball. The children can also participate in the talent show, attend magic shows and do arts and crafts.

"I have always told our staff that being a counselor is the hardest fun you will ever have," Adamowicz said. "I know that was my experience. It taught me an outstanding sense of responsibility."
