Ball State charter school taken off probation

After 18 months, one of Ball State's 35 charter schools was officially taken off of probation.

The university placed the charter school, Imagine Master Academy, on probation in February of 2010 after an investigation into the academy's school board's operations.

With the probation came urging from the university for the Fort Wayne academy to work on improving oversight of the institution in order for the charter to become reinstated.

John Jacobson, Dean of Teachers College, which also oversees Ball State's charter school program, said he is pleased with the outcome.

"We don't like to see our schools get in situations they don't need to be in," he said.

In order to qualify for reinstatement, the academy had to meet a series of different requirements outlined by the university. The requirements included complying with the Indiana Open Door Law, and restructuring the school board.

Earlier this month, the Imagine Master Academy was able to meet all of the requirements outlined by the university, officially removing the institution from probation.

Jacobson said he hopes they will not have to be put back on probation.

Charter schools are public schools that usually do not have the same regulations as public state-run schools. Among the benefits, charter schools give more options to parents who are searching for the best possible education for their children.

Ball State has 35 charter schools with the possibility of 3 more schools being added in the near future, Jacobson said.

Jacobson said that Indiana does not have any private charter schools.

Public charter schools are just another option to regular state schools, and they can be a viable option for parents who are looking for a different education for their children.

According to Ball State's Office of Charter Schools Spring 2010 Newsletter, charter schools offer much more than just an educational experience.

"We value our partnership with our schools and look forward to continuing our work together as the charter program at Ball State evolves," director Larry Gabbert said in the newsletter.
