SOFTBALL: Gilbert named MAC West Player of the Week

Freshman recently broke Ball State record of home runs in a season

Jennifer Gilbert has been named the MAC West Division Player of the Week, according to the Mid-American Conference league office Tuesday.

It is the second time this season the young slugger has won the honor.

During Ball State's weekend match-ups with Western Michigan and Northern Illinois, Gilbert went 7-15 with four home runs, 12 RBIs and an incredible 1.267 slugging percentage.

On the season, Gilbert hit .357 with 61 RBIs and a Ball State record 14 home runs. Gilbert hit the record-breaking 13th home run Friday against Western Michigan, when she hit a two-run home run over the center field wall.

Gilbert's home run broke a tie she had with junior catcher and teammate Amanda Montalto. During the season, both Gilbert and Montalto broke Jen Reifscheidner's old record of 11 home runs in 2009.

Ball State travels to Akron, Ohio Wednesday to play Eastern Michigan in the opening round of the MAC Tournament. First pitch is at 11a.m.
