LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: Welcome to Ball State

Welcome to college — where you become the person you're meant to be.

This could be the best four years of your life, when you finally enjoy the freedom of being away from home. It's the safe haven before setting foot in the real world. Don't let the time slip by you.

This is also the place that prepares you for the real world. You definitely chose the best school for that — a place where you can be who you are and develop into the person you're supposed to be. The studier, the hippie, the realist. The person who sleeps in the back of the class, or the one who's leading the pack.

There's definitely a place for you here.

Just look around campus. It's the state's best-kept secret with its award-winning programs such as architecture, teaching and nursing, juxtaposed with things such as the weathered LaFollette Complex and the school's reputation as a hot spot for parties.

But we're cleaning up our act, and so should you. Enjoy your freedom here, but binge on learning, too. Take advantage of the technology that's at your fingertips. Take advantage of your professors' connections with industry leaders across the country.

And really, if you can survive the dungeon, LaFollette is probably where you'll meet your new best friend.

The point is this: do what you want, but make it count. Make friends, starting this week. Join clubs. There's more than 300 on campus, from Quidditch club to debate team.

You made it this far. Don't be nervous, and don't turn back. Don't wear your lanyard around your neck, and don't sleep through class.

And one more piece of advice to get you through your first week: Shafer Tower is like the North Star. Let it guide you to where everything else is on campus.

Become another intricate piece that shapes the personality of Ball State. Let it shape you into a better version of who you are.
