Today's Board of Trustees meeting could offer a first glimpse at how much the university will raise tuition, based on the $11.8 million budget cut from state appropriations.
Bernie Hannon, associate vice president of Business Affairs, said everything is still being considered, but a tuition increase is likely. Ideas like consolidating departments, cutting costs in specific areas and making cuts across the board aren't off the table.
"It will be a lot of planning during the next month," he said.
President Jo Ann Gora will give six proposals for tuition restructuring during the public meeting today at 3 p.m. in the Student Center. Some of her recommendations include bringing in line the cost of on-campus and distance education classes and increasing the cost of graduate level courses.
Tuition and enrollment are two major components standing in the way of planning the university's overall budget, Hannon said.
"I think we can assume there'll probably be some tuition increase," he said. "What it'll be, I have no idea."
The Board of Trustees sets tuition for each biennium, or each two years in the budget cycle. The Indiana Commission for Higher Education will give tuition recommendations on May 13, and university officials will meet the following Monday. The earliest Ball State can hold a public forum is May 26, which is also the earliest the board can meet to set tuition rates.
