4 QUESTIONS FOR THE SEASON: FOOTBALL

Questions surround new coach, nonconference play

1. Will Pete Lembo's offense work?

The first-year coach brings a no-huddle offense to the Cardinals this season. His offense wants to pass often, which could lead to more scoring than the previous two seasons.

2. Will the season opener at Lucas Oil Stadium offer a strong start?

Ball State's season kicks off against Indiana at Lucas Oil Stadium. It's a great venue, but its awesome size will seem 10 times larger as the team charges out of the locker room to a handful of Cardinal fans. Tickets will cost $40, and athletic director Tom Collins hopes to sell 40,000 tickets. Students will be allowed into the game for free just as they would if the game were held at Scheumann Stadium. Ball State beat IU 42-20 during its last matchup in 2008.

3. How will Ball State fare in the nonconference schedule?

Ball State didn't make Lembo's first year easy. Ball State plays Indiana at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis followed by a road game at South Florida. The team hosts Army two weeks after that before traveling to play juggernaut Oklahoma.

4. Who will be the starting quarterback?

Kelly Page and Keith Wenning vied for the position last year. They both showed potential as underclassmen, but Lembo hopes they will grow into stronger players. He said there's room for improvement.

It's anybody's guess who will lead the team at Lucas Oil on Sept. 3. Lembo said Wenning seemed to have an edge during practice, but Page showed potential in the spring game.
