AROUND THE MAC: Toledo wins WNIT title

Rockets win all six WNIT games after being upset in semifinals of MAC tournament

With a career-high 40 points, junior Naama Shafir led Toledo to the Women's National Invitation Tournament championship over the weekend.

Toledo defeated USC 76-68 on Saturday to give the Rockets their first postseason championship in school history.

Shafir scored her team's final six points at the free-throw line and was named the tournament MVP. She scorenine of her 23 second-half points during a 12-0 run that gave the Rockets a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Senior Melissa Goodall and junior Haylie Linn also reached double figures Saturday, scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore Yolanda Richardson was named to the All-Tournament Team with Shafir despite being held to a tournament-low four points in the championship.

The Rockets won all six WNIT games at home after being upset as the No. 1 seed in the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals. The championship win was their 18th-straight home victory and came in front of a school-record crowd of 7,301.

Other teams in the WNIT from the MAC were Kent State, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan.

This is the first WNIT title for the conference.
