UPDATE: Gov. Daniels lauds Ball State's achievements

President Gora announces scholarships for the incoming Bold Celebration Scholars

During a presentation at the statehouse today announcing 55 new scholarships for Ball State students, Gov. Mitch Daniels congratulated the university for the leadership of its students.

Daniels said the greatest leaders are starting at Ball State.

He spoke about other colleges competing in the NCAA tournament starting today and the difference between their priorities and the priorities of colleges like Ball State.

These students are going to college to play basketball. But students at Ball State are learning to be the leaders of tomorrow, Daniels said.

EARLIER: After a short delay, President Jo Ann Gora announced today that 55 incoming Honors College students will receive $10,000 annual scholarships from the Ball State Bold campaign.

Gora drew applause when she announced that the fundraising effort had already surpassed its $200 million goal, and more than doubled its original goal of 25 scholarship awards.

"Chief among our strategic goals is admitting more high-achieving students who are prepared to take best advantage of the opportunities that immersive learning offers," Gora said.

Gov. Mitch Daniels, House Speaker Brian Bosma, Senate President Pro Tempore David Long, and Ball State alumna and Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts joined many of the scholarship recipients and their parents at the Statehouse for the announcement.

Ahrendts, who spoke to students yesterday as part of the David Letterman Distinguished Professional Lecture and Workshop Series, led the creation of a $1 million emerging media scholarship fund that benefits the Bold Celebration Scholars and Burberry Emerging Media Scholars programs.

Known as the Bold Celebration Scholars, the recipients are among the early beneficiaries of the university's fundraising efforts. Most of the recipients are Indiana residents or from neighboring states, and include five National Merit Scholarship winners, with majors ranging from anthropology, business, pre-medicine and visual communication.

The Ball State Bold campaign's goal was to raise $200 million for scholarships, immersive learning experiences, and campus improvements.

"It's beyond exciting to imagine what some of these new students, with the generous support of our many donors, may have in store for Indiana and the world," Gora said.
