SGA seeks student senators

The new Student Government Association executive board began filling positions for its year-long term by starting with the credentials board.

The credentials board processes applications for new senators and recruits students to fill empty seats. Kevin Thurman, an SGA senator, will be the liaison between the credentials board and the executive board as the credentials board chairman.

The credentials board is made up of a senator from each caucus — Zeynel Guzeldereli from on campus, Bridget Edgeworth from off campus, Austin Hostetter from at-large and Cassie Childress from the organizational caucus.

SGA vice president Chris Buck said Thurman was a clear choice for appointment as Buck's replacement.

"[He has a] passion for senate," Buck said. "He has the energy, the drive and really the skills to do it."

Thurman said he feels confident with the members he chose to be on the credentials board.

"I feel like all four of those people are wonderful individuals and amazing student leaders," he said. "I know also that they are unbiased, and they will do a great job working with myself and members of the current slate to fill spots of the university government with student leaders."

The credentials board will work for the next year to make sure senate is filled with students. The board not only takes care of SGA seats, but also makes sure University Senate and Campus Council are filled to ensure student voices are heard by the administration.

Thurman said the main goal is to fill every empty seat.

"It does not just end with student senate," he said. "Our legislation moves on. If there aren't student representatives to make sure those voices are heard, administration might need more explanation about certain things or get confused."

Three at-large senate seats, one graduate assistant senate seat, one out-of-state senate seat and 10 off-campus senate seats are open. Applications are available online or at the SGA office.

Six freshman senate seats will be filled after the Fall Semester begins.

The executive board will continue to fill spots for its term over the coming weeks.

The cabinet will be announced next week. Senators Jacob Kluth and Chad Griewank will present their platforms to be voted on by the senate to determine the next SGA president pro tempore.
