Census data shows shrinking county, growing city

While Indiana has grown over the past 10 years, the city and county surrounding Ball State has seen an exodus of citizens.

Census data analysis shows that the population of Delaware County dropped by 0.9 percent, or approximately 1,000 people. Statewide, the population grew by 6.6 percent.

The state's 12th-largest county in 2000, Delaware County is now the 14th largest.

In Muncie, the population grew by almost 4 percent to surpass a total of 70,000. However, the city was passed by Carmel and Fishers, which both doubled in size, and Muncie has become the 10th-largest city in the state.

Delaware County saw drops in the numbers of two races: whites and Native Americans, both of which decreased by 3 percent each. The largest increases were by Hispanics, Asians and multiracial residents, although they combine to represent only 5 percent of the county.

Delaware County was one of 29 counties to have a decrease in population since 2000. Sixty-three counties showed growth, with the biggest gain coming in Hamilton County, which went up 50.3 percent.

Michigan was the only state in the country to show a population drop since 2000.
