Vote delayed on Indiana same-sex marriage amendment

INDIANAPOLIS — A vote in the Indiana House on a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage has been delayed for at least a day.

Resolution sponsor Rep. Eric Turner of Marion said he wouldn't call for a vote Monday because some House members who want to support it were absent for the day. He didn't specify when he expected a vote.

The proposed amendment stalled in the House under Democratic majorities the past four years, but is expected to advance since Republicans won control of the House in last year's election.

If it clears both the House and Senate this year, it would have to pass again in 2013 or 2014 before getting on the ballot for a statewide referendum.
