Students share Super Bowl experience

While the 2011 Super Bowl did not feature Indiana's beloved Colts, Ball State students on campus and off held large watch parties to support and heckle the Steelers and Packers.

Though there was a mix of fans from both teams, many students said it didn't really matter which teams played in the end because the Super Bowl is about the party.

A group of students from the Lutheran Student Fellowship gathered to watch the game, creating a crowd of Packers fans that outnumbered the Steelers fans.

Sophomore telecommunication major Adam Bailey said he did not have a favorite team, be he knew which team he wanted to lose.

"I'm rooting for no one in particular, but I'm leaning more towards the Packers," he said. "I just feel like they want to win the game more."

Bailey said it didn't matter to him whether a local team was in the game. He just enjoys to watching the Super Bowl.

"The Super Bowl is like a national sport. It's almost like a holiday for America," he said. "It is one of those traditions that brings people together."

With the Chicago Bears losing in the NFC Championship in late January, many Bears fans are still sore after the loss.

However, while Bailey just wanted to see a good game, graduate commutations major Emily Esmail just could not let the historic Bears-Packers rivalry go.

"I'm not rooting for anyone, but I know I don't want the Packers to win," she said. "I'm a Bears fan."

Anna Wurdeman, sophomore speech pathology major, said she was not interested in the game. She just watched it for the entertainment.

"I'm rooting for the Black Eyed Peas," she said. "I think they are a really talented and driven bunch."

Another noteworthy aspect of the Super Bowl was pop singer and actress Christina Aguilera's fouled up rendition of the National Anthem.

Instead of singing, "O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming," she sang an earlier line with a slight variation. She incorrectly sang, "What so proudly we watched at the twilight's last gleaming."

Other than the mistakes made by Aguilera at the start and by the Steelers throughout the game, students said the best part about the Super Bowl is the atmosphere and enjoying Sunday off before another week of school.
