Students fill Rec Center for free fitness classes

With Spring Break just around the corner, students are kicking it in gear with their workouts.

About 100 students, the majority of them female, crowded into the Student Recreation and Wellness Center main gym for free Pilates, Turbo kick and Zumba classes Tuesday night. The classes were free in honor of National Fitness Day as declared by the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association.

The rec center occasionally offers free classes during the first and last weeks of school, but an unlimited fitness pass for the semester is normally $95.

The Turbo kick class was taught by Julia Pohlman, a graduate student studying sports administration, who works as a fitness graduate assistant at the rec center. She describes it as a cardio-based class that also incorporates toning, with an abs and legs portion in the end.

"It's a wonderful combination of total body calorie burning," she said.

The workout combines kickboxing moves with upbeat music. Kendall Bonick, a sophomore elementary education major, works out four to five days a week for two hours a day. She comes to Turbo kick every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

"It's so much fun. It's high impact, and you're having a good time while still working out."

Bonick thinks it is important to work out. She said, "If you feel confident in your body type, you are happy all around."

Rachel Hill, a senior speech pathology major, is another instructor of fitness classes for the rec center. She teaches five classes a week and has been working there since last September. She runs every day on her own to build her endurance along with teaching classes.

"It helps with keeping up and being able to talk while you teach," Hill said.

She doesn't describe herself as athletic but has always made fitness an important part of her life. Hill believes people benefit from the fitness classes because they are a good motivator for people who have trouble working out on their own.

"It keeps them motivated because if someone's there instructing them and telling them what to do, it keeps them working out for the correct amount of time."
