Indiana students receive $12,000 grant for solar array

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana University students have received a $12,000 grant for a project aimed at installing a 2-kilowatt solar photovoltaic panel on the roof of the on-campus student union.

The Sierra Club's Coal Free IU project was awarded the gift from the Hoosier Legacy Fund that was started as part of last year's Senior Challenge. A group from Coal Free IU received the award at the IU Student Foundation's Black and White Gala on Dec. 2. They said their plan to install a solar array is an effort to make a public statement about the university's commitment to more sustainable energy sources.

The university expects to install the solar panels on the Indiana Memorial Union in April.
