Ind. House backs ban on synthetic marijuana

INDIANAPOLIS — Synthetic marijuana known as spice or K2 would be banned under a bill that has won unanimous support from the Indiana House.

The House voted 99-0 Monday in favor of the bill, which would treat possessing or dealing synthetic marijuana the same as the real drug. The Senate has approved a similar bill.

Several Indiana counties have local ordinances banning the substance from stores, but supporters say a state law criminalizing it is needed. Health officials and police have urged lawmakers to ban the substance, which has been blamed for adverse reactions such as increased heart rate and hallucinations.

Lawmakers from the House and Senate will likely work together as the legislation session continues to create a single bill banning synthetic marijuana.
