Help out and clean up downtown Muncie today

A few hours and a few helping hands is all it takes to make a difference in the community, and students can take part in a morning of cleaning in downtown Muncie on Saturday.

Muncie Delaware Clean and Beautiful needs volunteers to help assist with picking up trash in the area.

"I'd love to have 20 [volunteers], I get a lot done with 10, I could take 100," Tom Reeve, executive director of Muncie Delaware Clean and Beautiful, said.

Saturday will be the first clean up of 2011, but the organization cleans up once a month on the third Saturday of the month.

"It's a really fun time," Reeve. "It's a nice way to get some community service and walk around with a group of your friends and pick up trash."

Some fraternities have come to help out and they love doing being a part of the community, Reeve said.

"We concentrate on downtown," he said. "We start north at the river, go south down to the tracks, go west to Kilgore Street and east to Ohio Avenue."

Members of the board regularly come to help, but new faces are always welcome.

The clean up crew will meet at 9 a.m. behind Doc's Music Hall at the corner of Jackson and High streets. The clean up will last until about noon, but volunteers can come at any time.

If people want to stay longer, Reeve said he will stay with them.

If the weather changes and the clean up is canceled, it will be posted on the Muncie Delaware Clean and Beautiful's Facebook page.

The goal of the non-profit is "to support, organize, and educate about neighborhood cleanups, beautification activities, and community gardening in Muncie and Delaware County," according to its Facebook page.
