FIJI celebrates 10 years on campus with pig dinner

As FIJI members viewed pictures of their brotherhood, they celebrated the chapter charting day at the annual pig dinner.

More than 400 members came out to the pig dinner Saturday night at the Alumni Center. The event is held every year to commemorate Ball State's chapter of FIJI.

"Brotherhood is always being there, accountable for those you care about and not expecting to receive anything in return," FIJI member Pat Plumer said.

The dinner is a time for undergraduate brothers and graduate brothers to come together, establish bonds and have a celebration dinner, FIJI member Jacob Kluth said.

This year's dinner was a little different. It was the 10-year celebration of the chapter's charter.

The fraternity has come a long way in 10 years, founding father Collin Miller said. The fraternity went from being a small house on Wheeling Avenue to a house that can sleep up to 50 people on West Riverside Avenue.

"The chapter has changed, but it has changed for the better," Miller said. "Chapters change all the time. Everyone that is recruited is a different individual with different leadership skills. I'm glad to see the fraternity has grown to be so strong and successful since my day."

At the dinner, a pig is roasted and is served on a decorative platter. The members celebrate fraternity traditions, and awards are given out to those displaying the five values of friendship, knowledge, service, morality and excellence.

"If I didn't join a fraternity, I have no idea who I would have become," Carson Lance said. "The fraternity shaped and molded me. The people in the chapter were excellent role models and mentors, and without them I would not have become the man I am today."
