Computing Services: Beware of malicious e-mails, public safety notices

As if the weather weren't enough, Ball State's computer security team said someone used public safety as a ruse to send out malicious emails.

"Earlier today, a Ball State user's account was compromised and used to send a message containing a malicious attachment to a large number of Ball State e-mail addresses, " said the advisory from Information Security Services on Wednesday afternoon.

The message bore a subject line that falsely read, "Emergency Notification."

"Messages like this one are designed to comprise your computer, compromise the Ball State network, or steal your personal information," the security team's warning said.

The security alert said genuine Ball State public safety notices and emergency alerts are sent from Public Safety Notice (bsusafety@bsu.edu) or Emergency Notification (bsualert@bsu.edu).

"Ball State never will deliver safety information in the form of an attachment to an e-mail, ask you to download a file, or ask for your password or other personal information," the alert said.

To avoid falling victim to the scam, email users should not open attachments or respond to messages that do not come from a trusted source.
