'Big Love' modernizes ancient play

Strother Theatre presents an updated version of 'The Suppliant Women'

Fifty sisters ran away from Greece and are hiding away in an Italian villa to escape their 50 cousins who they have been arranged to marry. The scene is set for chaotic "Big Love," the play opening tonight in Strother Theatre.

Written by Charles Mee, "Big Love" is based on the ancient Greek play, "The Suppliant Women," but with a modern spin.

Director Tyler Smith saw the play at the Actors Theatre of Louisville when it debuted 10 years ago.

Smith, assistant professor of theater, said it has been a popular play for the past 10 years because it is a strange, funny, wonderfully epic ride, which is exactly why he recommended it to the Production Committee.

"Big Love" is a complicated story about both romantic and family love.

"This play is about the search for love," Smith said. "How do we figure out who we are first, and then go out into the world and love others?"
