WEATHER UPDATE: Potentially catastrophic winter storm headed this way

The winter storm that's sweeping the country is expected to hit Muncie with a sheet of ice this afternoon and last until Wednesday night at 7 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Precipitation may fall as sleet or freezing rain, and significant ice accumulation is possible — as much as one inch or more.

Winds of 35 mph are expected, which could result in downed trees and power lines. Long durations of power outages are possible.

A foot to 16 inches of snow is possible in East Central Indiana.

Duke Campbell, superintendent of the Delaware County Highway Department, said his crew will be out early pre-treating the roads with beet juice and salt brine, according to a Muncie Star Press article.

Troopers will also work extended shifts. The Indiana State Police, Indiana Department of Transportation and Indiana Department of Homeland Security have been in close contact to keep roads covered.

So what should you do to prepare? MSNBC suggests an emergency kit with these items:

-Flash lights

-Battery-powered radio or TV

-First aid kit

-A supply of non-perishable food items

-A can opener

-Three-day supply of bottled water

-Fully-charged cell phone
