Late Nite teams up with students to help ARF

When junior entrepreneurship major Leisha Sigler attended Late Nite in December, she decided the venue was the perfect place to get donations for the Muncie Animal Rescue Fund.

"College students drink so much pop there. One night it just clicked," she said. "I then e-mailed [Late Nite] and talked to them."

Sigler worked out a deal with Late Nite so she could set up bins for students to put their empty soda cans to donate to ARF.

Sigler said she and a group of other volunteers will pick the cans up every Monday morning and take it to ARF.

"We're expecting between four and eight trashcans each night," she said.

Late Nite goes through at least 12 cases of pop every Late Night, Kelsey McPheeters co-sponsor chair for Late Nite, said.

The location site is similar to ARF's year-round pop can drive. The organization uses the cans to help pay for supplies and medical bills for the animals at the shelter.

Sigler held two pop can drives on campus in the past, but she said she's not allowed to have a permanent location on campus.

"For Late Nite to allow us to do this is huge," she said. "When students go to Late Nite they can just drop off cans every week, which is amazing."

McPheeters said Late Nite is happy to help.

"So many of our students would definitely want to donate to ARF, but don't necessarily have the money. This gives them a free way to help out," she said.

McPheeters said Late Nite will just be testing out the new system.

"Right now it's on a trial run just so we can see how it goes. It's up to how many students donate and whether or not it becomes a mess with full pop cans and trash," she said.

But McPheeters is optimistic.

"I'm hopeful we'll be able to do this the rest of the year," she said.
