INDIANAPOLIS — The chairman of the Indiana House Ways and Means Committee says he expects the panel to make at most modest changes to Gov. Mitch Daniels' state budget proposal.
Republican Rep. Jeff Espich said Tuesday he believes the committee will pass a budget plan that would spend an amount similar to that proposed by Daniels and not raise state taxes.
Espich spoke after top budget aides to the Republican governor formally presented the plan to the committee.
The two-year budget plan would cut out optional Medicaid services, including hearing aids and dental work. It would also reduce higher education spending by 3 percent while leaving funding for public schools flat.
The committee has scheduled hearings until Feb. 3 on spending plans for various state agencies.
