Ball State Office of Student Rights handles about 400 cases each year

The Office of Student Rights and Community Standards handles more than 400 offenses each school year. The following is a sample of cases and punishments from 2009-10.

A student who was charged with battery of another student in Swinford Hall in August 2009 was suspended for the remainder of the semester and given two years of disciplinary probation, among other sanctions.

Another student had two minor consumption citations issued within 10 days of each other in September 2009.

On Nov. 18, 2009, a sprinkler head in North Quad was vandalized, causing flooding of a hallway and $477 in damages and labor. The student in that incident, accused of the code violations of disruption, vandalism and tampering with fire equipment, was suspended for a year in December 2009, referred to anger management and given lifetime probation upon re-enrollment.

One party on Dec. 11, 2009, resulted in about 15 minor consumption citations. All but a few of the students issued citations were 18 or 19 years old. The host of the party received disciplinary probation for nearly a year.

Computer misuse, specifically the illegal downloading of 4.5 terabytes of copyrighted TV shows and movies, garnered disciplinary probation and an official reprimand for a graduate student living in Scheidler Apartments in January 2010.

In March, a student was suspended at the end of the Spring Semester until Spring 2015, one of the longest suspensions of that year. In that incident, a student was accused of violating the theft and misuse of property sections of the conduct code after taking another student's belongings, including three Coach purses, a wallet, debit and credit cards and an iPod, among other items. Nearly $400 was charged to the debit card at Meijer and Walmart after it was taken.
