3 men pull women from car just before train hits

CHESTERTON, Ind. (AP) — Police say three northern Indiana men pulled a woman from her car moments before a freight train struck the vehicle and demolished it.

They say Justin Jeffress, Dustin Paliga and Kyle Hodgson of Chesterton drove up to a crossing in the city early Wednesday and found the car on the tracks, its driver slumped over the steering wheel.

After hearing the train's horn, they ran about 50 yards to the car and pulled 24-year-old Courtney Althoff of Michigan City from the vehicle about 30 seconds before the train struck it and the collision set it on fire.

The Times of Munster and the Merrillville Post-Tribune report the 14-car train pushed the car nearly 200 feet before it came to a stop.

Police charged Althoff with driving while intoxicated.
