Indianapolis homicides at 109, up from 102 in 2009

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis police say the city has 109 homicides so far in 2010, an increase from last year while below the level of the recent past.

Police tell WISH-TV the killing total is up from 102 homicides in 2009 but down from 121 in 2008 and 151 in 2006.

Among the latest homicides is that of 26-year-old Oscar Martinez. Police say it's one of at least six killings that are considered self-defense.

Police say they believe Martinez attacked 24-year-old Fabian Vasquez during an argument Saturday over a woman. They say another man joined Martinez in that attack before Vasquez apparently stabbed both men in self-defense, killing Martinez.

The woman then hanged herself.
