U.S. Olympic marketing officer to speak at Schranz lecture

The chief marketing officer of the United States Olympic Committee will be talking to students about her professional successes tonight.

Lisa Baird will be speaking at 8 p.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom.

Baird has worked in marketing for many well-known companies, including the NFL, IBM, Proctor and Gamble and now the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Dustin Supa, assistant professor of journalism, said Baird was a prime candidate for the Schranz lecture series.

"She has made a lot out of her career at a fairly young age," Supa said. "She is probably one of the younger Schranz lecturers that we've had. She is also a woman in a career that is typically dominated by men."

The lecture will be open to all students. Supa said he thinks students of all majors will be interested in what Baird has to say.

"I think that a lot of students will take away from the lecture the idea of, 'How do I navigate my own brand through turbulence? What do I need to do to succeed?'" he said. "Certainly, I think that will be inspirational. I think it will be educational."

Baird will be the 32nd Schranz lecturer. The lecture series is the oldest distinguished lectureship for public relations in the country.

To decide the lecturer for the series, a committee creates a list of 70 to 100 candidates. The lecturer is decided based on the person's position in public relations.

Supa said not only students will be attending the lecture. People will be coming from other universities to hear what Baird has to say about her extensive career.

He said Baird is a great person for those going into public relations to listen to.

"We really think she is on the cutting edge of where strategic communication is going to be going," Supa said. "Overall, it is her leadership and her vision that she holds for the organization that she has been working for."
