Professor becomes new telecommunications department chairman

Associate professor and internship coordinator Tim Pollard will become the new chairman of the telecommunications department starting in January.

Pollard said he sees the transition as an exciting opportunity, especially since the telecommunications and journalism departments have merged their curriculum.

"It's a chance for me to help build [the department's] legacy and continue to build the department to be the best it can be," he said. "We're a national model for this type of program. Hopefully we all can do a good job and keep the department's high quality."

Pollard has been involved in some of the department's most creative projects, Lori Byers, associate dean of the College of Communication, Information, and Media, said.

"I think [Pollard becoming the chair of the department is] a positive move in part because Tim has been involved in so many innovative projects over the years," she said. "He's well-respected and well-liked by faculty and colleagues in the college and across the university."

Faculty members voted Pollard to be the new chairman.

"If you look at who we have in the department, we have international experts in film comedy, we have people in network news, award-winning documentarians," Pollard said. "For them to say, ‘We want you to help this department go to the next level,' it's quite humbling."
