More than 500 flu shots still available at Health Center

Early November is the best time to get a flu shot, Kent Bullis, medical director of the Amelia T. Wood Health Center, said.

That way the immunity will last the entire season. Flu shots will be given daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Thursday and Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday at the student Health Center. The vaccine costs $20.

Bullis said the Health Center received 700 vaccines around mid-October. More than 150 have already been given to students, and most of those were administered Thursday during the Well-O-Ween event at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

Bullis said there's no indication that this year's flu season will be any worse than normal, which he says is a good thing.

"Last year, we were all very apprehensive because of the new strain of the flu virus," he said. "To know it won't be worse than normal is encouraging."

Bullis said students and faculty who already have a cold or fever should wait until they're well to receive a flu shot. The vaccine is most effective in younger people, he said.

"Getting a flu vaccine is a prudent thing to do."
