MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State loses to St. John's in overtime

Cardinals miss chance to win game at end of regulation

Randy Davis dribbled to the top of the key and faded away for a game-winning shot. It fell short, and so did the Cardinals' hopes of winning.

After coming back from 13 points in the second half, Ball State lost 78-73 in overtime to St. John's in the first game of the Great Alaska Shootout. The Cardinals led by six with 2:15 remaining in the second half, but couldn't hold off the Red Storm.

"We were right there and had a quality look at the end of the game that we just didn't convert, coach Billy Taylor said. "Tonight was disappointing, as we thought we had the game in hand after showing a lot of resiliency and heart to battle back."

Ball State trailed 34-22 at the half. With 15 minutes left in regulation, the Cardinals went on a 24-6 run to take the lead. St. John's tied the game with 33 seconds left and never gave the lead back. The Red Storm controlled overtime and iced the game with six free throws at the end.

It marked the 14th time in a row Ball State failed to beat a team from the power six conferences. Their last win was against Nebraska in 2002.

Jesse Berry scored a career-high 18 points in the loss, including three 3-pointers to lead the Cardinals. The team shot 50 percent for the game.

The team is now 2-2 after losing their past two games. Next up in the Shootout is Southern Utah on Friday at 4 p.m.
